Position Description

The Senior Structural Geologist is a seasoned technical professional with specialty skills in structural geology as well as broad, geological and geophysical technical skills. He/She works in a Regional Geology team composed of staff with a range of traditional G&G skills as well as specialty skills, such as basin modeling, geochemistry, etc. This team is a resource primarily to the Exploration Department, but will also be a resource to other departments on an as-needed basis, providing sound geological expertise in the evaluation of opportunities in which the company can participate. The Senior Structural Geologist has proven competencies and is responsible for handling complex geological/geophysical assignments independently.  He/She receives work in terms of broad objectives and is relied upon to deliver key results.  At times, the Senior Structural Geologist may provide leadership on assignments where these specialty skills uniquely position him/her to take the lead.

This position is eligible for Our Client’s Compressed Work Schedule program (CWS). This program provides flexibility in work hours to assist employees in balancing their work and personal lives. CWS participants work eight hours and 15 minutes per day and earn two Fridays off per month, for a total of 24 days off annually.

Essential Duties and Responsibilites

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • As a senior technical staff member, proposes and carries out complex assignments independently with minimal day-to-day direction from supervisor.
  • Provides structural evaluation of exploration opportunities ranging from basin scale to individual prospects.
  • Provides structural restorations of prospects in order to achieve a complete understanding of the prospect’s structural evolution and its implications on its attractiveness; in so doing, this requires a close working relationship with staff in the evaluation teams as well as a complete understanding of the geological aspects of all our prospects.
  • Works closely with staff in order to ensure that all prospects are properly placed and understood within the regional framework.
  • Provides expert advice to the exploration evaluation teams on the structural risks of all our prospects so that a comparative ranking can be determined and its implication on the attractiveness of the exploration portfolio, as well as the individual prospect can be achieved.
  • Provides training to staff, in both one-on-one and occasionally group sessions, on structural geology; raises the Exploration Department’s overall understanding of structural geology.
  • Maintains key relationships within industry and academia in order to keep technical skills current in his/her specialty area.
  • Generates play concepts and recommends new areas for exploration efforts.
  • Recommends areas for future seismic data acquisition.
  • As a senior technical staff member, provides insights into competitor technical efforts and exploration strategies, recommending ways for Our Client to exploit opportunities.
  • Participates in peer-based risk and resource estimation processes; ensures such processes are adhered to in conducting his/her evaluations; and seeks input from peers to ensure high technical quality is achieved in evaluations.
  • As required, evaluates farm-in opportunities, making recommendations to management on participation.
  • Represents Our Client on appropriate industry-funded consortia.
  • Provides mentoring and technical assistance to staff.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

There are no direct supervisory responsibilities; however, he/she may act as leader of small groups of technical personnel and provide technical guidance to lower-level geologists.

Qualifications

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree in Geology or Geophysics, or a Bachelor degree with experience commensurate to a Master’s degree, is REQUIRED.
  • Minimum of 10 years professional oil and gas exploration and development experience working with or in a business unit cross-functional team or technology group.
  • Familiarity with seismic interpretation systems and structural restoration applications is a Must.
  • Deepwater experience is preferred, with strong preference for Gulf of Mexico expertise.  Similar deepwater experience in other Frontier Basins would be considered.
  • Familiarity with depth-imaging technology a plus.
  • Must Be able to work in highly charged, fast-paced work environment and be able to simultaneously handle multiple projects.
